community generated art
What is Community-Generated Art?
Community-generated art (sometimes known as ‘distributed design’), is a process where many individuals in a community work together to make one or several pieces of art. Often times an individual does not know what other individuals are doing… thus, the final product emerges out of the unseen interactions of many.
One Vision Many Voices is a 3 step community-generated art project:
1. First, people throughout the community are invited to submit original artwork. The artwork can be of any medium (e.g. drawn, painted, stitched, photographed, written) but should be on or attached to a single 8×8″ piece of fabric and should be done to the theme: ‘the thing(s) I love most about my community’. Later in the project, all of these sheets of fabric will be put together to create a ‘community vision quilt’.
2. Second, using the panels of the community vision quilt as inspiration, people from the community will work together to create an original song that captures the essence of the visual squares. The song writing process will be facilitated by the nationally known folk duo, Magpie.
3. Third, people from the community will take the song and create their own music videos to match it.
At the end of the project, the community vision quilt, the folk song and the music videos will be shared with the community with awards to be given to the most inspirational pieces!
