WHAT: As part of the annual Autumn Glory Festival, Pat Stakem (Johns Hopkins) presents the saga
of the B&O railroad’s ’17 Mile Grade’ from Cumberland to Oakland. PLUS – a train photography competition open to the public!

Pat Stakem, author and historian from Johns Hopkins University presents the saga of the B&O railroad’s ’17 Mile Grade’, the engineering feat that brought the tracks from Cumberland over the mountains to Oakland, Maryland. Pat will discuss the history of rail in Western Maryland and the role that rail travel plays today and may play in the future.
ALSO- there will be an train photography competition open to the public! Prizes to be awarded. Submission guidelines:
- all photographers welcome, amateur and professional alike
- max 2 pieces per photographer
- photographs of all sizes welcome
- photographs can be mounted/matted but should not be framed
- all photographs should follow the theme: ‘Trains and Rails’
To submit a photograph you may mail the photo to 93 Mount Pleasant St., Frostburg MD 21532… or, you may bring the photo along to the event. If you are bringing the photo to the event, please arrive at the Garrett College Auditorium at 1pm.
Pat Stakem is a member of the Council of the Alleghenies, the C&O Canal Association, and is the Historian for the Western
Maryland Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. He is also a member of the Western Maryland Railway Historical Society, the Locomotive and Railway Historical Society, the Preservation Society of Allegany County, The Mountain State Logging and Railroad Historical Society, and the Westernport Heritage Society. He has published several books about railroads in Allegany County, including Cumberland & Pennsylvania Revisited and Railroading around Cumberland. He has also co-authored CSX Diesel Locomotives and Western Maryland Diesel Locomotives with his son. A native of Cumberland, he teaches for Loyola University in Maryland and the Whiting School of Engineering, Johns Hopkins University.
